My name is Dave Young, the founder of Arma Training and US Fighting Systems – and a co-director at Vistelar

Since 1972 I have been concerned about kid safety — initially for myself (due the neighborhoods in which I was brought up), then as a police officer, police trainer, veteran of hte United States Marine Corps and, more recently, for my own children raising (five boys and a girl) and now with grandchildren ranging from 1-9 years of age.

I have heard all of the advice and, frankly, much of it is a bunch of hogwash.

The reality is that most of the advice you hear comes from theories, in their minds and in the minds of others it makes logical sense.  Someone that calls themselves an “expert” then makes something up that sounds good and it gets adopted as the truth — even though it has never been tested in the real world.

In contrast, I have made a career of testing what works and what doesn’t work as far as personal safety and self defense — on the streets where it counts.

Doing this is a requirement for my job, which — for over 30 years — has been to train law enforcement and military professionals how to keep themselves and the public safe.

Through all of these experiences, I’ve accumulated a wealth of knowledge about kid security and safety.

So I decided to develop an ongoing series of Safe-Kid Tips and put up this web page so people could access them from one place.
