Family Defense

Real Defense for Real Families

The word FAMILY is still one of most precious treasures we all share no matter where in the world we live; learning how to defend yourself and your loved ones tough and the results of winning and losing means living or dying

The family core unit is still one of the most important treasures in the world. Whether your living alone, by yourself, or you’re raising your children or taking care of your parents. Having the need to defend yourself where losing means dying and winning mean living is something I unfortunately grow up with.

I have lived and worked in some of the toughest streets in the United States. Born in Brooklyn, NY where fighting was a way of saying hello to someone you didn’t know, to growing up in places like Hialeah, FL during the Mariel Boatlift officially began with the arrival of over 125,000 Cubans to Southern Florida from Port of Mariel, Cuba; this increased population also sparked random acts of violence simply because you didn’t speak the same language, to living and working in Compton-Watts and Inglewood, California where not having the same color of skin created conflict from verbal to physical attacks.

I also lived and worked in Germany and Japan, so being of different ethnicity caused most of your problems. Places were the word danger has grown to be violent and horrific and without remorse. Being a former corrections officers working inside the jails with convicted inmates, to working the streets as a police officer in the state of Florida, to a veteran receiving an honorable discharge from both the United States Army and United States Marine Corps, I have seen violence up close and personal and understand the physical and mental challenges, and the emotional hardships attacks have on a person and the obstacles families face together in defending and responding to them.

Do not confuse being an honest law abiding citizen with being safe and protected. Bad things to happen to good people but the good people who are prepared survive to actually talk about it.

Being aware of your surroundings means you are aware and prepared to what is happening and going on around you not just looking in where you are going.

Real-world personal safety and self-defense training for YOUR FAMILY is different than traditional defense training:

I have done some research on various levels of intensity people have that bring them to the reality of what their own inner courage is. Our society has grown gotten softer and the acts committed against them have become more violent.

  • Not everyone has been in a fight before
  • Not everyone is 20 something and in shape
  • Not everyone has a military experience to draw from
  • Not everyone has been trained in how to use a gun or knife
  • Surviving a real-world attacks it isn’t a sport — with mats, time limits, weight classes, and referees. In the real world, you can’t throw in the towel if things aren’t going well — losing just isn’t an option.
  • It doesn’t assume any rules of engagement. In the real world there are no rules (except later in court where many encounters end up)
  • Everything you do in making an effort to defend your life will end up in either a criminal and or civil courtroom where you could end up right next to the person who tried to attack you.

Sadly, most personal-safety and self-defense training doesn’t consider these realities — even when labeled as “reality” based. Self-defense training is rarely focused on defending your life, the techniques taught require physical capabilities beyond what’s possessed by most people, and the ever-present legal issues are seldom considered, and one of the most important facts about self-defense in today’s worlds is you are more than likely to be attacked or robber by someone who is holding a gun or using a knife or other dangerous weapons.

In contrast, the personal-safety and self-defense systems I’ve taught over the last 30 years to police, corrections, and military professionals have these nine attributes:

  1. Have staying alive as the #1 priority
  2. Work despite the physical limitations of the professional applying them
  3. Compensate for the physical capabilities of the assailant
  4. Consider all situations and environments where an attack may occur
  5. Are quick to learn and easy to remember (just 3 steps for each technique)
  6. Are courtroom defensible
  7. Are medically and tactically sound
  8. Are executed the same way whether standing or on the ground
  9. Have been proven to work in real life or death situations!

My name is Dave Young and I founded Your Family Defense in 2010 to bring these same nine attributes to personal-safety and self-defense training for the general public.

I have experience as a military veteran of both the U.S. Army and United States Marine Corps, police officer (civilian, military), corrections officer, and security agent — and have been training professionals how to stay safe and defend themselves since 1980. My professional students vary widely in size and abilities and they operate in a world where there are no rules — so providing training with the above nine attributes is critically important.

My students are exposed to dangerous situations every single day, they have limited time for training and retraining, and almost every physical encounter will end up being reviewed, both civilly and criminally.

That’s why Family Defense is such a breakthrough in personal safety and self-defense training. For over 30 years, my systems have been proven to save lives on the streets and be defendable in court — in almost every situation imaginable.

Your Family Defense is the first true real-world-based personal safety and self-defense program for the every man and every woman who wants to feel safe and able to defend themselves and their family, if attacked.

If that’s you, I encourage you to take advantage of our training programs which are delivered via multiple methods — including live training at host martial arts schools, online multimedia programs and physical products (DVDs, manuals).
